When sending letters, parcels or direct mail to recipients in Australia, it’s important to use the correct Australian address format to prevent delivery delays or returned mail.
Address Formats in Australia

There are 3 types of street addresses used in Australia. Residential, business and PO box numbers.
Australian Residential Address Format
For sending mail to a residential street address within Australia, use the following address format:
Line 1: The person’s full name
Line 2: The street address. If an apartment address, include the apartment number before the street number (on the same line)
Line 3: The city, state and postal code (4 digits)
Line 4: If sending mail from overseas, it is essential to add the country name (Australia) or country abbreviation (AUS) on the last line of the address

Australian Business Address Format
Business or commercial street addresses, used for offices or shops, are usually more complex than residential addresses as they may include a building name, suite number or floor.

Including Traditional Place Names

To acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, you can include traditional place names in either the ‘to’ address or ‘from’ address on your mail.
To search and find traditional place names, check AIATSIS (Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Land Councils).
Traditional place names should be included in the address below the recipient’s name, but before the street address, suburb or town.
Traditional Place Name Address Example:
John Smith
Wiradjuri Country
70 Hill Street
Coolamon NSW 2071
State abbreviations for sending mail to Australian addresses
Like the US, Australia uses abbreviated forms of the State or Territory within the street address.
To ensure your mail ends up at the right Australian address, ensure to use the correct state or territory abbreviation:
| Australian State or Territory | Abbreviation |
| Australian Capital Territory | ACT |
| New South Wales | NSW |
| Queensland | QLD |
| South Australia | SA |
| Tasmania | TAS |
| Victoria | VIC |
How to correctly format addresses on envelopes for direct mail

When sending envelopes to Australian street addresses it’s important to understand the layout zones of a standard envelope, read electronically by Australia Post’s letter sorting technology.
There are four zones on an envelope:
- Service zone (Advertising, return address etc)
- Postage zone (Area for postage stamp)
- Address zone (Where the ‘to’ address should be located)
- Clear zone (For mail processing barcode printing and scanning)
Tips for Addressing Envelopes
There are a few things that you can do to fast-track the processing of your direct mail. Following these tips will give your mail the best chance of reaching its destination without a hitch!
Check the Postcode is Correct
Postcodes are used by Australia Post to sort mail quickly. Therefore, making sure that you’ve got the right postcode is one of the best ways to support successful delivery of your mail.
Use Dark Ink
If your envelope is printed, make sure to use a dark ink to improve the readability of the address. Black text on a white envelope is generally preferred. Try not to use colours like yellow or orange for the text.
Keep Your Text Aligned
Ensure the text of the ‘to’ address is neatly left aligned (do not indent any of the address lines).
Include a Return Address
You should always include a return address when sending mail to an address in Australia. Especially when sending direct mail, using a return address can give you valuable insights, including undeliverable addresses.
Use Printed Envelopes
While handwritten envelopes can feel more personal to the recipient, using printed envelopes ensures the highest likelihood of successful delivery through the postal system.

Australia Post Mail Hold & Redirection Services
Please note, if you’re sending mail to an address where the recipient is away or has recently moved, it may be held or redirected automatically by Australia Post. This service is generally set up by people prior to overseas holidays or scheduled moving dates.
To ensure successful and timely delivery of direct mail, we recommend maintaining your database to ensure that addresses are kept up to date as much as possible.
